Industrial R&D Promotion Programme (IRDPP)

Introduction

DSIR is the nodal department for granting recognition to in-house R&D units established by corporate companies, Scientific and Industrial Research Organizations (SIROs) and registration to Public funded research Institutions like universities, IIT's, IISc, Regional Engineering College (RECs) other than hospitals.

Government of India has announced several fiscal incentives for promoting R&D in industry and institutes. These incentives are in terms of tax rebate and customs /Excise duty waiver on inputs for R&D. Some of these incentives are reviewed time to time so as to make it more effective and easy to implement.

Secretary, DSIR is the prescribed authority for claiming tax benefits under Income Tax Act, 1961 on expenditure incurred to R&D centres. As per relevant notifications R&D units recognized by DSIR are eligible for customs duty and central excise waiver on specified goods incurred on scientific research (not being expenditure in the nature of cost of any land building).

Commercial R&D companies approved by DSIR before 1st April, 2007 are eligible for 10 years tax holidays.
