Indian economy has changed in many ways after the liberalization drive. The change is also visible in its national innovation system due to the exposure to market forces. A number of global firms have started R&D centres in India. Many private firms have increased their R&D spending. Patentable innovations have also shown a sharp rise after the opening of the Indian economy. Intellectual capital of the country is in the news and it is often mentioned that India has never had it so good in R&D. Yet, the fact remains that there is a lot of catching up to do, in international comparisons.

The recent science policy statement observes the need for increased investments by industry in R&D in its own interest to achieve global competitiveness, to be efficient and relevant. The Policy proposes to evolve innovative mechanisms to increase industrial investments in R&D.

The project R&D in India: A Webportal is intended to capture the industrial R&D related data from various annual reports, analyze and present it to wider dissemination. The web portal was to document the R&D news, interviews with the important players in the R&D scenario, sectoral trend analysis on R&D investments, publish periodic newsletter, present and analyze IPR trends, academy and industry interactions, and also bring in international comparisons on S&T related aspects. There was no known attempt to present such information as a web portal with the industrial R&D focus.

The project brought to fore the R&D investment trends, news, views, comparisons and analysis for all those interested on the matter on a continuous basis in a public platform. Such information is of considerable importance in the context of the new policy thrust and trends in globalization. The country aspires to be a knowledge economy with its burgeoning services sector and the project works as a yardstick to such a measure. There was no known consorted effort in this direction.
