Training Programme on Modern technologies

All India Institute of Medical Sciences in collaboration with the Medical Library Association of India will organise to organise a `National Training Programme on Modern Technologies for Information Handling' at AIIMS from January 19_23, 1998. The training shall be imparted on library automation, online searching, CD-ROM databases, Cd-networking, virtual libraries, email, telecommuni-cation, library networking, electronic publishing, Internet, etc.

The training is designed to benefit librarians, Information specialists, documentalists, R&D scientists, health scientists, computer professionals and teachers in library science.

IASLIC XXI All India Conference

The XXI All India Conference of the Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC) is being organised by the Tamilnadu Library Association at Coimbatore during December 1997. The main theme of the conference is "Information Superhighway: Its Impact on LIbrary and Information Services in India". The issues for consideration will be under `Information Superhighway' and `Internet.'

Special Interest Group Meetings under various disciplines are also being held during the conference. Both invited and contributed papers will be considered.

Caliber-98

The fifth National Convention Caliber-98 will be jointly organised by Information & Library Network (Inflibnet), Ahmedabad and Utkal University, Bhubaneswar at Utkal University, Bhubaneswar during February 20-21, 1998.

Theme of the Conference

The theme of the Convention is Information Management in Academic and Research Libraries. The topics for discussion are as follows:

  • Information management in academic libraries

  • Tools and techniques for information management

  • Collection development in the context of library networks

  • Database and information services in regional laungage

  • Antomationand network services in college libraries : Problems and issues

  • Emergence of digital libraries and information society.

Registration

The delegate registration fee is Rs 300/-. Payment should be made by demand draft/cheque in favour of Organising Secretary, CALIBER-98 payable at Bhubaneswar. For outstation cheques, Rs 10 may be added as bank collection charges.

Accommodation

Limited accommodation may be made available in guest houses/hostels on request on first come first served basis. Also single and double room hotel accommodation will be arranged on request alongwith cheque/DD for Rs 200/-.

Workshop on exploitation and utilization of S&T Information Resources in Asian-Pacific Region

The 8th Workshop on Exploitation and Utilization of Information Resources in Asia-Pacific Region sponsored by the State Science and Technology Commission of China (SSTCC) and organized by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC), will be held in Beijing, China, from 6_20 May, 1998.

Activities

  • Lectures on technical information services by ISTIC specialists;

  • Exchange of experiences between the participants;

  • Interchange of information needs or projects to be transfered from respective countries;

  • Visit some information centers and consulting services, small and medium-sized enterprises in China.

Call for Papers or Cooperation Projects

All participants are expected to present a country report in the following categories:

  • National information policy;

  • Information organization and information services;

  • Information systems and networks;

  • Information resources management;

  • Information marketing

Participants should bring about 20 copies of their papers with them for the workshop. Participants are expected to bring some technical transfer or information needs from enterprises of their countries or at least an intention of the cooperation for their countries through the interchange of the projects.

Potential contributors should submit abstracts of their papers or the information needs as well as technical transfer before 1st April, 1998.

Seminar Session

The Programe also includes a Seminar Session with the main theme "Internet and Information Service: Opportunity and Challenge", where selected speakers are invited to present major papers on:

— Internet and information infrastructure in developing countries;

— Intermet and information service/policy;

— Internet and information education and training;

— The information centers as gateways to exploit internet.

Persons interested in this Seminar Session are invited to send the application with the full text of the paper (in English) by 15 February 1998.

Cost

  • Participants should bear their own expenses of international travel and accommodation in China. ISTIC can arrange a package service of 60 US Dollars for one person per day, which includes a room, meals, local transportation in the city during the workshop, exclusive of transportation between cities.

  • ISTIC can provide, upon request, financial assistance which covers accommodation and local transportation.
