DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF DATABASE ON FOLK KNOWLEDGE: A STUDY IN MAHARASHTRA

 

The study has covered 26 villages, approximately 4-5 villages from each division of Maharashtra. The villages have been selected on the basis of representing different cultures, traditions, customs, lifestyle and economic development. 187 persons were interviewed and 1393 items of folk wisdom have been collected. UNESCO software WINISIS is used to digitize and retrieve the information. Information includes title in English, source, local name of plants, Marathi name of plants, botanical name & Family name, application, methodology, Proverbs in English and Marathi etc.

The data collected was analyzed and tabulated based on the parameter like habits of tribal & Girijans; contribution of respondents; division-wise analysis; gender-wise analysis; age-wise analysis; education-wise analysis; occupation-wise analysis; subject-wise analysis of Folk knowledge, knowledge content-wise analysis etc.

Folk knowledge collected in the study covers the areas like - Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Child Care, Environment, Health care, Treatment for common diseases, etc.
