Archiving Ethno-medicinal Knowledge and Local Health Care Systems (LHCS) through Modern Electronic Gadgets


An Explorative Study by Department of Human Development, Home Science College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Madurai.

Objectives:
  • List out the existing ethno-medicinal practices (medicinal plants) and local health care system followed by the remote villagers, tribals and nomadics.
  • Enumerate and document the practices with the help of modern electronic gadget like digital video, handycam and print media.
  • Explore the scientific rationale behind the documented practices
  • Assess and compare with the modern scientific technique with the help of public private partnership
  • Preserve the practices through multimedia based protocol for the benefit of scientific community, industrialist and for our future generations.

The following information were collected under the project:

The project study was carried out in Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Kollam, Eranakulam, Kottayam and Alappuzha districts of Kerala state mainly from the local herbalists and healthcare practitioners during the year December 2006 to March 2009. The PI has collected information on healthcare practices for treating various human ailments/diseases, documented with photographs and created a database using the software namely Dream Waiver, adopt photo shop, HTML, flash, PHP, etc. The dry samples for treating various diseases were also collected and preserved. Through this project 78 ethno-medicinal practices and 271 treatments, 10 general medicines and 34 home medicines were collected and documented.
